Stamps in this section depict floppy discs also known as diskettes. A floppy is a removable data storage device consisting of a thin circular magnetic disc enclosed in a square or rectangular plastic case. Floppy was invented by IBM in the early 1970's, it became diffused with personal computers during 1980's and 1990's as the primary external storage medium. There are different formats of floppies: the oldest 8-inch and 5¼-inch supplied in a flexible casing (hence the name floppy), the last format 3.5-inch. Today floppies have been replaced by other high capacity devices as CD-ROM and USB flash drives.
